The last Horn and Hardart in New York closed in 1991. Lisa used a Wikipedia page that listed famous Philadelphians and that’s how she enlisted people to interview about the Automat like former Mayor Wilson Goode.

In 1912, the partners began building restaurants in New York, starting with an Automat in Times Square. H&H Automats were particularly popular during the Depression era. By the early 1950s, there were a total of 157 Horn & Hardart restaurants with Automats in Philadelphia and New York serving more than half a million patrons per day.

THE AUTOMAT We’re not talking about Bamn, the new version on St. Marks Place. We’re talking about the old-school Horn & Hardart Automats, the last of which was on 42nd Street and Third Avenue and closed in 1991. The ones with the chrome-plated knobs and food behind little windows.

The last Horn & Hardart Automat restaurant closed in 1991, but recently there has been a revival of interest. One reason is that a couple of well-heeled entrepreneurs have attempted to revive it with modern self-service technology: The Brooklyn Dumpling Shop in New York City and Automat Kitchen in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The 1843 original Horn & Hardart Automat building was a 24,000 square foot historical landmark in Philadelphia that still stands today. Located in the heart of Philadelphia on Jewelers Row near Thomas Jefferson University, Horn & Hardart’s Automat’s revolutionized the way Americans ate when they opened up in 1902 – complete with coin-operated glass-and-chrome order compartments.

How To Make horn and hardart macaroni and cheese. 1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Blend in flour and cook 2 minutes. Beat in the milk, then the cream and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat and cool slightly. 2. Stir in the cheese until melted, then
1/2 cup canned tomatoes, diced. 1/2 tsp sugar. (Serves 4 to 6) Cook macaroni according to directions on the package. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt butter in the top of a double boiler. Blend flour, salt, white and red pepper in gradually. When smooth, add milk and cheese, stirring constantly. Cook for a few minutes until it thickens.
